A horse's diet generally contains little fat (2-3% of the energy requirement). Although there is insufficient scientific information about the ideal fat percentage, it may be stated that a well-balanced, fat-rich diet has a fat content of around 8%. This means that energy now comes less from protein and carbohydrates (starch) and there is a gradual move over to a fat-rich diet. A high fat content in ready-to-eat feeds is difficult to achieve at a technical level. In order to achieve this, the appropriate feed material has to be supplemented with a vegetable oil.
