Riding Blankets for Your Horse

Riding blankets (also known as kidney blankets) are designed to keep your horse warm during warm-up and cool-down – ideal for cold (winter) rides or temperature differences between stables and outdoors. They prevent muscles from cooling down too quickly, ensuring comfort and injury prevention. Available in waterproof, fleece, or lightweight versions with practical features like a saddle cutout and Velcro closures.

We are the specialists in horse riding blankets. Whether you're looking for a waterproof riding blanket or a fleece riding blanket, we have it. You can use a riding blanket not only for riding out but also during warm-up or lunging. Most riding blankets have a saddle cutout and stay in place well while riding.

Horse Ridiing Blanket – Protection During Riding and Dismounting

At DocHorse, you'll find a wide range of horse riding blankets, also known as kidney blankets, from KentuckyBack on TrackAmigoRambo, and Bucas Recuptex. You can order riding blankets from us with or without a saddle cutout, made from waterproof material, soft fleece, or wool. This ensures a suitable solution for every horse and every season.

Why do you need a riding blanket?

A horse riding blanket (also called a kidney blanket or exercise sheet) is used during warm-up, when your horse hasn't fully warmed up yet, or during cool-down, to prevent muscles from cooling down too quickly. Especially in cold temperatures or for clipped horses, a riding blanket is ideal, and you can even ride with it.

A riding blanket without a saddle cutout is also very suitable for lunging. The lungeing girth can easily be attached over the blanket, or the blanket can be fastened to the girth. These variants are also called Quarter Sheets or square riding blankets.

Different types of riding blankets

Waterproof and fleece riding blankets

  • Waterproof: ideal for rides in rain or cold.
  • Fleece or wool: warm, soft, and breathable, perfect for riding indoors or in dry cold.

Fly riding blanket

In addition to standard versions, we also offer fly riding blankets, made from thin mesh fabric that provides protection against flies and horseflies. Thanks to the saddle cutout, they stay in place during riding. This allows you to enjoy a ride in the woods or training session undisturbed. View our full range of fly riding blankets here.

Therapeutic riding blanket

For extra support, there are also therapeutic riding blankets, such as the popular Bucas Recuptex riding blanket. These blankets have a special inner fabric that stimulates blood circulation, helping your horse warm up faster, move more smoothly, and reducing the risk of muscle soreness.

Design & comfort

Riding blankets feature smart details such as:

  • Saddle cutouts for a stable fit during riding.
  • Velcro closures at the front for quick attachment or removal.
  • Tail flaps and leg straps for extra stability during movement.

Which riding blanket suits your horse?

Choosing the right riding blanket depends on your situation:

  • Do you ride outside a lot? Then choose a waterproof variant.
  • Do you have a clipped horse? Then a fleece or wool blanket is a good option.
  • Suffering from insects? Opt for a fly riding blanket.
  • Looking for extra muscle support? Choose a therapeutic riding blanket.

Our blanket specialist Charlotte has tried on all our riding blankets and knows all the ins and outs. She is happy to help you with suitable advice, so you can be sure you're making the right choice for your horse.
