Garlic for your horse

Discover our selection of garlic supplements for horses, available as powder, granulate, flakes, or oil. Garlic is known for its rich composition, including sulfur compounds and vitamins (A, B1, B2, C). It is often used for natural support of resistance, respiratory tract, digestion, and as an odor barrier against flies and insects.

Note: Garlic should be fed with care due to the possible formation of anemia at high dosages. Do not feed more than 15–30 g per day.

Garlic for horses: natural support and odor protection

Garlic (Allium sativum) is popular as a plant-based supplement in horse nutrition due to its unique sulfur compounds, antioxidants, and enzymes that contribute to supporting overall vitality.

Why give garlic?

  • Support of resistance & respiratory tract: Garlic has antibacterial and expectorant properties that contribute to maintaining healthy airways
  • Natural insect repellent: The scent of garlic can make horses less attractive to flies and insects
  • Digestion & appetite: Common components such as sulfur and vitamins contribute to healthy digestion and appetite

Safety and usage

  • Give a maximum of 15–30 g per day; higher amounts can lead to Heinz body anemia, due to damage to red blood cells
  • Pregnant mares and horses with liver or blood disorders are advised to consult a veterinarian first
  • The dosage depends on the form (powder, flakes, oil) and the horse's preference; always follow the manufacturer's instructions

The effect of garlic in horses

Garlic can have an expectorant and blood-purifying effect and is therefore used for horses suffering from respiratory problems. Garlic can also change the body odor of your horse, making your horse less attractive to flies and insects; therefore, garlic is often given to horses, especially in the summer.

How much garlic does my horse need?

We advise giving garlic for a short period; long-term feeding of garlic carries a risk of mild anemia. For horses, an amount of 0.2 grams per kilogram of body weight is harmful. This means that for an average horse of 500 kg, garlic is harmful if you were to give 100 grams per day. We advise not to give more than 15-30 grams per day; then garlic is safe to feed.
