We have a wide selection of sweet itch rugs for horses with summer eczema. This includes sweet itch rugs from Bucas, Rambo. In addition to sweet itch rugs, we also have a separate sweet itch neck cover, this separate neck cover only protects your horse's mane.
Why a sweet itch rug?
Summer eczema is an allergic reaction to the saliva of the biting midge (also known as a Culicoides midge). When your horse is bitten by this midge, it can manifest as rubbing of the tail and mane. Unfortunately, summer eczema cannot be cured, but you can prevent your horse from being bitten by the midge as much as possible. This will reduce its itching. To prevent your horse from being bitten, you can put on a sweet itch rug. A sweet itch rug is made of a thick fabric so that the midges, which cause summer eczema, cannot bite through the rug. It is very important that a sweet itch rug fits well and covers as much of your horse as possible; the more you cover, the smaller the chance of it being bitten. A sweet itch rug therefore covers the entire neck, belly, and tail.
For every horse – including Shetland ponies
Sweet itch rugs are available in various sizes, including wide or pony models that are perfect for Shetland ponies and other compact breeds. View our full range of sweet itch rugs for Shetland ponies here.
When to put on a sweet itch rug?
Put on a sweet itch rug as soon as the biting midge is active. The midges are generally active from March to September, so start putting on a sweet itch rug from March onwards.
