Biotin

Looking for Biotin for your horse?

Biotin is a vitamin that is important for, among other things, the skin, coat, and hooves of your horse. It is therefore important that every horse has enough Biotin. We often see Biotin supplements for horses with poor hoof quality, as a Biotin deficiency is one of the most common causes of this.

There are various supplements with Biotin. For example, TRM Biotin contains Vitamin B8 to keep your horse's hooves in good condition. Biotin is indeed the most important water-soluble vitamin when it comes to maintaining healthy hooves and hoof growth.

Biotin for the hooves

Biotin (vitamin B8 or H) is an essential nutrient for horses that plays a key role in hoof quality and growth. Horses with brittle hooves, loose or split hoof walls, or visibly slow hoof growth often benefit from a targeted biotin supplement. In addition, biotin supports a healthy skin barrier and a naturally shiny coat—an added benefit during shedding or seasonal changes.

What can you expect from biotin?

Horn grows slowly: the first improvements in hoof quality are usually visible after 3–6 months, while a complete renewal of the hoof wall can take 9–12 months. Therefore, consistent, daily feeding is crucial. Biotin works best in combination with building blocks for horn: organically bound zinc and copper for keratin production, and (dl-)methionine and other sulfur-containing amino acids as “building blocks” for a strong and elastic hoof. MSM or linseed oil can also be used to support skin and coat.

Dosage and use

Always follow the label or the advice of your veterinarian/nutritionist. In practice, the common daily dose for adult horses is often around 15–25 mg of biotin per day; ponies and young horses receive proportionally less, adjusted for weight and diet. Biotin is available as a powder, granule, or liquid form and can easily be added to concentrate feed or mash. Pay attention to the overall mineral balance in the diet (forage analysis, any mineral supplements), so you do not unintentionally overdose or underdose with zinc and copper.

When do you choose biotin?

  • For brittle, cracked, or poor-quality horn
  • After periods of wet-dry fluctuations affecting the hoof
  • For horses that need to rebuild strong horn after hoof problems
  • To support skin and coat for extra shine and resilience.

Choose quality

Opt for supplements with transparent declaration (mg biotin per daily dose) and feed-grade or higher ingredients. Our specialists are happy to help you choose the right biotin dosage and possible combination with zinc, copper, and methionine, tailored to your horse and forage. This way, you build strong, elastic hooves and a healthy, shiny coat step by step—all year round.

Frequently asked questions about biotin for horses

  • What is biotin and why is it important for horses?

Biotin is a vitamin from the B group (vitamin B8) that plays a supportive role in the formation of healthy hoof structure and the quality of skin and coat. Horses can benefit from extra biotin to support the overall condition of hooves and skin.
  • When should you give biotin to a horse?

Biotin can be a valuable addition for horses with brittle hooves, slow hoof growth, or a dull coat, but also preventatively to maintain the quality of hooves and skin. Many owners see improvement with daily use after a few months, depending on the initial situation.
  • How quickly will you notice the effect of biotin?

Hoof growth is relatively slow: you typically see improvement in the strength and structure of the hoof wall after 3 to 6 months. Improvement in coat and skin condition may be visible sooner. Daily and consistent use is essential to see results.
  • How much biotin should you give?

Use the manufacturer's dosage instructions. Many supplements contain between 10 to 20 mg of biotin per dose. Make sure to adhere to the prescribed amount, as this contributes to achieving a stable improvement result.
  • Is biotin safe for long-term use?

Yes, biotin is safe for long-term application in horses. As it is a water-soluble vitamin, excess is excreted through urine. Long-term use helps to permanently support the health of hooves, skin, and coat without expecting disruptive side effects.
