Vitamin E

We have a wide selection of vitamin E supplements for horses. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects muscle cells against oxidative stress, supports the immune system, and contributes to supple muscle function. Ideal for sport horses, horses in training, or horses with a vitamin E deficiency. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that your horse cannot produce itself, so it is important that your horse receives enough Vitamin E through its diet. We recommend feeding a vitamin E supplement in combination with linseed oil or another omega oil.

Our supplements are available in natural or synthetic form, with or without selenium. We sell vitamin E products from TRM, NAF, Puur, and Cavalor, among others. Still looking for a different supplement? Also check out our other supplements for muscle recovery.

Vitamin E for horses: support for muscles and immunity

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for horses and plays an important role in maintaining healthy muscles and a strong immune system. It is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in the body, thus protecting muscle cells from damage. Especially sport horses, horses in training, and horses that eat little fresh grass often need extra vitamin E.

Why supplement with vitamin E?

Although vitamin E is present in small amounts in fresh grass, its level in the diet can decrease in horses that primarily receive hay or silage. Supplementation can help with:

  • Supporting supple muscles and preventing stiffness.
  • Accelerating muscle recovery after exertion.
  • Supporting the immune system.
  • Preventing deficiency symptoms such as muscle weakness and reduced performance.

Natural vs. synthetic vitamin E

Vitamin E supplements are available in two forms:

Natural vitamin E (d-α-tocopherol): better absorbed and more effective.

Synthetic vitamin E (dl-α-tocopherol): often more affordable but less efficiently absorbed.

Vitamin E with or without selenium

Vitamin E often works synergistically with selenium, a mineral that also contributes to the protection of muscle cells. Choose a combination product if your horse may also have a selenium deficiency, but avoid overdosing in horses that already receive selenium from other sources.

Overdosing selenium can have harmful effects. The selenium levels in our supplements are safe to administer, but if your horse already has very high selenium levels, additional supplementation can be harmful (this can be determined by blood test). Therefore, we also have Vitamin E without selenium in our range, such as TRM Vitamin E 2000.

Our range of vitamin E supplements

At Dochorse, you will find vitamin E in powder, liquid form, or as part of a complete supplement. We work with top brands like TRM, NAF, Puur, and Cavalor. Whether you are looking for pure natural vitamin E without selenium or a combination with selenium, we have a suitable product.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vitamin E

  • How do I know if my horse needs extra vitamin E?

A vitamin E deficiency can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiffness, reduced performance, poor immunity, or even muscle damage (myopathy). Horses with little or no access to fresh grass, such as horses fed mainly hay or silage, are at higher risk of deficiency. A blood test via the veterinarian can determine if your horse needs extra vitamin E.
  • Why is vitamin E important for horses?

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that acts as a powerful antioxidant. It protects muscle cells from oxidative stress and supports the immune system. In horses, it plays a major role in maintaining supple muscles, preventing stiffness, and promoting recovery after exertion. Especially sport horses, horses in training, and horses that eat little fresh grass often have an increased need for vitamin E.
  • What is the difference between natural and synthetic vitamin E?

Natural vitamin E (d-α-tocopherol) is better absorbed and more effective per milligram.

Synthetic vitamin E (dl-α-tocopherol) is often more affordable but less efficiently absorbed. For horses with a severe deficiency or increased needs, the natural form is usually recommended.

  • Should vitamin E always be combined with selenium?

Not always. Vitamin E and selenium do work synergistically: together they provide stronger antioxidant protection for muscle cells. If your horse already receives selenium through its basic feed or other supplements, it is important to avoid overdosing. If possible, have the selenium level checked before giving additional amounts. If your horse has sufficient selenium, we recommend giving a Vitamin E supplement without selenium.
  • Is vitamin E safe for long-term use?

Yes, vitamin E is safe for long-term use provided the recommended dosage is followed. As it is a fat-soluble vitamin, it is stored in the body. An excessively high dosage over a long period can in rare cases lead to side effects, so always follow the instructions on the label or the advice of your specialist.
