Why a fly mask for your horse?

A fly mask protects your horse's sensitive eyes from annoying insects and dust. Insects and flies tend to hover around your horse's head, which can lead to irritation, inflammation, and sore eyes. By having your horse wear a mask, you prevent direct contact between insects and the skin, allowing your horse to graze peacefully and undisturbed in the pasture. Some masks can also be used during riding. In that case, make sure to choose a mask made of a fine mesh fabric so your horse has good visibility.

What to look for when fitting?

It is important that a mask fits snugly around the head so there is no space for flies to get underneath. However, the mask should not be too tight. Most fly masks have a fur trim, which ensures that the mask does not rub and is comfortable to wear. The fur trim also acts as a barrier, making it harder for insects to get under the mask.

When fitting, it is also important that the mask has enough clearance from the eyes and eyelashes. The mask should not touch the eyes and eyelashes. Most fly hoods are made of a stiff, plasticized mesh fabric, which helps the mask stand off the head nicely.

Finally, it is important that the fabric of the mask is sufficiently transparent. You can easily check this by looking through the mask yourself. Generally, the finer the fabric, the better the visibility. These masks are also suitable for riding. However, keep in mind that fine mesh fabrics are more fragile. Therefore, if your horse is in the pasture with other horses, we recommend opting for a stiffer (plasticized) fabric.
