As a result, the Fulmer snaffle functions like a loose-ring snaffle with enhanced lateral guidance from the cheeks, while the action of a full cheek snaffle is more similar to that of a olive head bit.

The cheeks of the Fulmer snaffle exert lateral pressure on the horse's cheeks. This supports lateral guidance and restriction of the horse, which is particularly helpful during the training of young horses.
