Newborn foals don't have the necessary antibodies against infections yet. A foal will not produce these antibodies in sufficient quantities by himself until he is 3 to 5 weeks old. To be able to tide this period over, the foal must get these antibodies through the colostrum. If a foal hasn't been able to drink sufficient colostrum, or none at all, it is extremely important that the foal gets colostrum as soon as possible. One possibility is giving Pavo Colostrum within 12 hours after the birth of the foal. Antibodies can only pass the intestinal wall the first day after birth. Within 12 hours after birth the body will absorb the antibodies very well, after 24 hours almost not at all. Gebruiksaanwijzing 

Verwarm 1 liter merriemelk of Pavo-Veulenmelk tot handwarme temperatuur (38 - 40 °C). Indien geen merriemelk of Pavo-Veulenmelk aanwezig is, kan halfvolle melk gebruikt worden. Niet uitsluitend water gebruiken om de Pavo Biest aan te maken, omdat water geen vitaminen bevat. Voeg vervolgens de volledige inhoud van de Pavo Biest sachet toe en roer tot alle biestpoeder is opgelost.  Verstrek om het uur ca. 250 ml handwarme biestmelk (38 - 40 °C) met behulp van een fles met speen of vanuit een emmer.

Bereidingstips

U kunt het beste de biestmelk au bain-marie verwarmen of warm houden. Au bain-marie is het verwarmen in of boven een warmwaterbad. Neem een pan of een kom met een minimale inhoud van 1 liter en plaats deze in of boven een grotere pan met heet water. Au bain-marie verwarmen voorkomt schiften of aanbranden.
Verwarm de biestmelk nooit in de magnetron! Pavo Biest gebruiken bij problemen met de melkgift van de merrie, vlak na de geboorte van het veulen (liefst binnen 3 uur, uiterlijk binnen 12 uur na de geboorte verstrekken) Bij een zwak veulen of een veulen dat geen merriebiest krijgt, is het aan te raden een tweede Pavo Biest sachet te verstrekken. Laat voor alle zekerheid de dierenarts binnen 24 uur een algehele controle op uw veulen uitvoeren.
