Looking for a fly rug with rain protection?

Why do you need a fly rug?

A waterproof fly rug protects your horse from changeable weather. Furthermore, most fly rugs are UV-resistant, so your horse's coat is also protected against UV radiation.

What should you consider when ordering?

This depends entirely on your personal preferences. There are a number of factors you can consider, such as: the fit, model with or without a neck cover, treated with an insect repellent or not, and of course the price. When fitting, pay close attention that the rug is not too tight. Keep in mind that your horse stands with its head down all day, so also check if it has enough room in the neck, chest, and wither area in that position.

Frequently asked questions about fly rugs with rain protection

  • What is a waterproof fly rug or fly rug with rain protection?

A waterproof fly rug, also called a rain fly rug, combines insect protection with a waterproof top layer. These rugs keep your horse dry in unexpected rain and simultaneously protect it from flies and other insects.
  • Can I protect my horse from insects and rain with 1 rug?

Yes, definitely. Such rugs are ideal for changeable weather, as they keep insects out and prevent a wet back thanks to the waterproof inner layer with mesh sides for ventilation.
  • Are standard fly rugs waterproof?

No, most fly rugs are made of breathable mesh material and are not designed to repel water. In rain, your horse will get wet under the rug.
  • Can my horse wear a fly rug in the rain?

Logically, no. A mesh fly rug absorbs water, becomes heavy, can shift, and increases the risk of skin irritation. To keep your horse (partially) dry, it's better to use a fly rug with a waterproof top.
  • What are important considerations for waterproof fly rugs?

Besides protection against rain and insects, the rug must remain breathable. A lining that is too warm or not breathable can be harmful in warm weather. Therefore, choose a material that wicks away moisture and ventilates.
  • Should I replace standard fly rugs with waterproof versions?

That depends on your environment and usage. For heavy, prolonged rain, waterproof fly rugs are recommended. For light or short showers, a regular fly rug is usually fine, provided your horse can dry off afterward.
